Each of these free crochet dress patterns is a real published pattern with written instructions and a full size range, linked to the designer who wrote it. All four go to 5XL — unusually good coverage for free garment patterns — and two are written as beach cover-ups rather than standalone dresses.
The two things that decide whether a crochet dress works are the yarn and the length. Cotton for the first, and your own shoulder-to-hem measurement for the second.
Choosing a size and length
Work from the finished bust measurement rather than the size letter, and check the finished length against your own shoulder-to-hem. A dress is the one garment where being two inches out is immediately obvious.
| Style | Fabric | Wear it |
|---|---|---|
| Open mesh cover-up | Deliberately sheer | Over swimwear |
| Solid-stitch dress | Opaque | On its own |
| Lace wedge / textured | Semi-sheer | With a slip |
1. Crochet Beach Cover Up
The simplest construction here and the most forgiving to fit: two panels seamed together, in an open treble-and-chain mesh that is deliberately light and breathable. Louise Bollanos writes it in eight sizes, XS through 4XL/5XL, in Pima cotton on a 5 mm hook. Rated easy to advanced beginner, and because the fabric is open there is no fitting precision required. 2. Pua Poa Beach Swimsuit Coverup
Worked lengthwise in turning rows from top to bottom rather than side to side — so the stitch pattern runs vertically and the dress hangs longer rather than wider. Two panels seamed with a neckline opening left, finished with a crocheted cord belt woven through the middle. Lindsey uses Pima cotton worsted on a 5.5 mm hook, nine sizes XS to 5XL. 3. Crochet Vivo Dress
A fitted top with decorative post stitches at the edges and an oversized skirt in alternating front and back loop single crochet — and it is reversible, so the same dress gives two necklines. Janne Kleivset writes it in nine sizes XS to 5XL in Paintbox Cotton DK on a 5.5 mm hook. Rated intermediate; the fitted bodice is the reason. Free pattern: Crochet Vivo Dress.
4. Penelope Crochet Maxi Dress
One pattern, four garments: Hannah Cross writes it with customisable length so the same instructions give a crop top, a knee-length dress, a midi or a full maxi. It starts at the sleeves and works top down in a lace wedge stitch, in sport weight Pima cotton blend on a 4 mm hook. Sizes XS to 5XL, chest 30 to 62 inches. Intermediate. Free pattern: Penelope Crochet Maxi Dress.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which yarn for a crochet dress?
Cotton, and nothing else really works. A dress hangs from the shoulders under its own weight all day; acrylic stretches and by evening the hem is two inches lower than it started. Cotton has almost no give. All four patterns here use it.
Are crochet dresses see-through?
The mesh ones are, and deliberately — two of these are written as swimsuit cover-ups, where that is the point. For a dress to wear on its own, choose a solid stitch and go down a hook size, or plan to wear a slip underneath.
How do I get the length right?
Measure from your shoulder to where you want the hem and compare it to the pattern’s finished length before you start. The Penelope pattern makes this easy by writing four lengths into one set of instructions — crop, knee, midi and maxi — so you simply stop where you like.
How much yarn does a crochet dress take?
A great deal more than a top: plan on 1,500 to 2,500 yards for a knee-length dress in DK or sport weight, more for a maxi or a larger size. Work out your size’s yardage from the pattern first, and buy one dye lot.
For a first crochet dress, the two-panel mesh cover-up asks the least of your fitting. If you want one pattern that covers several garments, the Penelope’s four lengths do that. Each link goes to the designer’s own page with the full size charts.
